Input Devices

Drawing Tablets: A device used to draw images which can then be transferred and stored onto a computer. Tablets are more effective for drawing than using software on laptops or computers. This is because instead of using a mouse to draw there is a pen provided making drawing faster and more accurate. The tablet can also be connected to the computer were files can then be transferred. However, there are a number of disadvantages of using drawing tablets. More time would be spent drawing on the tablet than would be the case if paper was being used. Tablets which are of any use to an IT professional would be quite expensive as they are bigger than the average tablet.

Mouse: A small pointing device with buttons used to move, select and change items on a computer screen. They are connected via a USB lead in computers. A mouse can also be connected via a USB lead on a laptop but laptops have their own mouse pad built into them.

Keyboard: A set of keys used for inputting information into a computer. On a laptop the keyboard is built into it while on a computer it is connected via a USB lead. Keyboards known as adaptive keyboards have been made for people with disabilities in order for them to be able to see or find the keys more easily.

Microphone: There are a number of uses of microphones in ICT. They can be used in video conferencing, teleconferencing and music recording. They can also be used in video games allowing users to talk to other gamers through a headset.

Joystick: A lever used to control the movement of the cursor for video games and computer graphics. Joysticks have become unpopular in recent years due to developments in the computer gaming industry. E.g. PlayStation and Xbox releasing motion sensing technology for their consoles.

Scanner: Scans images and text and converts them into digital images. There are number of different types of scanners; desktop scanners, hand held scanners and 3D scanners are a few examples. They are mainly used in offices and schools and some modern day printers have scanners built into them.

Mobile Phone: A wireless telephone which operates over a large geographic area. It can be used to transfer files such as pictures, videos and music to a computer using a USB connection. It can also have files transferred to it from a computer as well as receive files from other phones using a Bluetooth connection.

Digital Camera: A camera that can take high quality videos or images. They are built into most modern phones and the files are stored on a memory instead of the traditional film. They have the ability to zoom in and out on an object and can take multiple photos at one time.
